Leslie Calvin Brown was born on February 17, 1945. Adopted and raised by Mamie Brown, the woman he credits as the greatest influence in his life.

Labeled "educable mentally retarded" as a child, Les rejected that identity and discovered his voice through the encouragement of a high school teacher.

Became a popular radio DJ in Columbus, Ohio, then entered politics, serving three terms in the Ohio House of Representatives.
